A
day out in the countryside of Crete. A perfect chance for you to get to
know the real Cretans and the real way of life in the small villages of
the island. Driving through the scenic route of central Crete we pass the
fertile wine plain of Peza and we make our first stop at the Monastery of
Agarathos, one of the oldest ones on Crete. The church of the Monastery is
dedicated to Virgin Mary and manuscripts, dated back to 1559, provide
evidence that it had an important library and was an educational center. Next
stop will be the village of Thrapsano which completes today 8000 years of
history of handmade pottery. Within the same natural environment and in
the same great tradition, you can watch the potters continue to create
masterpieces worthy of the Art of Minoan Pottery. At
the southern slopes of Dicti Mountain there is the picturesque village of
Viannos, where you can taste Greek coffee in a traditional “Kafenio”,
before we continue our route to the south coast and the tiny village of
Myrtos, through beautiful landscapes of wild flower vegetation. Here we
have our midday break with plenty of time for swimming in the calm waters
of the Libyan Sea and lunch. Passing
Ierapetra, Pahia Ammos, Istron and Agios Nikolaos we make our last stop in
Neapolis where you can taste “Soumada”, a traditional Cretan non
alcoholic drink made of almonds. This will complete a day that you will
have felt just like you have been a Cretan yourself!! |
