Lassithi Plateau - Agios Nikolaos

Lassithi Plateau is one of the most attractive places that Crete has to offer. It is famous for its white-sailed windmills that have been used for decades to irrigate the land. With its 20 small villages, its plain fruit fields and its rich agriculture, Lassithi remains one of the most traditional areas on the island. Unspoiled by tourism, far away from the busy resorts, it gives the impression that time has been on a standstill.

Our first stop is not far away from the village of Psychro, where you can visit the famous Zeus Cave. A 20-minute-walk on foot brings us to the entrance of the cave, where Zeus, the father of gods, is said to have been born. (It is advisable for visitors to wear proper hiking footwear).

After a trip through the Plateau that gives us the chance to admire its numerous scattered villages, we stop for the noon in the village of Tzermiado. Here you have the chance to taste a traditional lunch (optional).

Leaving the Plateau, we reach the most famous monastery of Crete, the Monastery of “Panagia Kera”. Today only nuns live there and take care of the place. In the inner yard there is the Byzantine church, where Virgin Mary cried. On its altar, you can see not only the very old icons of Virgin Mary but also various frescoes. During your visit you will feel the peace and quiet of the place and that will surely be a wonderful experience to remember for a lifetime!
